What is swing direction?

In my last blog post, I told you about the importance of controlling your swing direction and how it allows you to change your clubpath.

And…

I also told you that I would explain more about swing direction in today’s post.

Well I don’t want to be accused of not being a man of my word so here it is, the element of the golf swing that I believe to be the most important.

Here’s another one of those sciency TrakMan explanations of what swing direction is;

Swing Direction – The horizontal direction of the plane relative to the target line defined by the club head’s center of gravity movement prior to impacting the golf ball.

Or a better way to understand it would be to imagine the bottom of the swing as a hulahoop.

The swing direction would then be direction that the “base of the hulahoop” is pointed relative to the target line.

The difference between club path and swing direction is that club path is only referring to the direction of the club at one point in time (impact), whereas swing direction is measuring the journey of the club throughout the entire bottom arc of the swing.

swing plane

That’s why I believe that swing direction gives us much more of an understanding of what the player is doing through impact than club path ever can.

Take for example a square club path.

A golfer can achieve a square club path through having an in to out swing direction, an out to in swing direction or even a square swing direction depending on his attack angle or where in the hulahoop he struck the golf ball.

That means that even though the player has a square club path, we can’t possibly start to observe the real physics of the shot until we know what all of the other parameters involved are doing.

There is another real reason why I focus on swing direction.

When a golfer is able to consistently square up his swing direction to the target line, all of the other parameters of impact such as club path and face angle all start to fall into place.

It’s almost like the brain understands where the swing is coming from and makes better reactions to control the club through impact.

Every single time that I have seen a player improve the consistency of his swing direction, it’s resulted in better parameters across the board.

So…

If you really want to achieve greater consistency within your golf swing, then you need to learn how to control your swing direction.
